Hard sound-reflecting surfaces or vaulted ceilings create unwanted reflections and sound pressure maxima in the room, which at certain points negatively affect audibility and intelligibility. Furthermore, this can lead to booming or fluttering of the sound. To avoid these effects, room acoustic measures such as absorbers, resonators, or reflectors are used.

The interior design of a venue also significantly influences its acoustics. For example, the equivalent absorption area can be significantly increased with upholstered seating, which in turn lowers both reverberation time and sound level in the room.

The room acoustic measures range from a suspended acoustic ceiling to so-called acoustic pictures (broadband absorbers that can be printed with any motifs) to resonators, which act within a narrow frequency band and thus specifically dampen booming frequencies (caused by room modes).
